The Highliners - Rude Boy (7") Pink

If you know THE HIGHLINERS and read the title of the A side, „Rude Boy“, its quite clear that it wont be oldschool psychobilly. It is a Ska song in the unconventional interpretation of Ska by an open minded band from the billy spectrum. It is an homage tot he guys with the sunglasses and pork pie hats and the sound of 1979, without trying to copy it. For those of you who dislike Ska it might be a relief to read that there’s no horn section involved. It has also to be said, that the guitar solo shows traces of twang and that a returning guitar-part reminds me of „La Bamba“. So this is not 2-toned, but HIGHLINERS pink. Off beat or not. And it is fun. Before I forget: The femal backing vocals by Mel Sardi spice up the chorus nicely. For my taste, the rhythm guitar sounds a bit to thin and hight-heavy. Which is probably a reminiscence to some Ska-guitar sounds. I would nevertheless have prefered a little more punch and power here.
